What (Else) Do COP26 and my Sailboat Specs Have in Common?

Actually, I didn’t even know the answer till I started typing and words came out and went that way.

But first, so the train of thought’s in order, I MEASURED EVERYTHING…

Almost everything. There’s a few spots I can’t reach due the current Boat:Bin Ratio – an inadequately researched statistic (or more correctly probably, a statistic lacking documented research) about which unsurprisingly little information is available. Nonetheless, I can tell you that the Boat:Bin Ratio for a Grampian 26 is not 1:11.

I copied the rigging measurements, and I copied the drawings I marked everything on, from sailboatdata.com… drawing my own will happen another day, because I want to, but there’s no point reinventing wheels while driving… or reinventing keels while you’re sailing?

Oh dear, this was going to be a completely practical post about boat specs, but now that I’ve typed that sentence above — well, that’s pretty much mostly what’s happening in regards to the climate and human rights crises. A lot of design teams spilling blood on their drawings on the chart table in the captains’ quarters of this sinking boat while we try to paddle the other way.

And we’ll be imminently treated to a new increment of that at COP 26.

My message to COP 26

I did waste an inordinate amount of time trying to do my own plan drawings, and trying to trace them off the laptop screen. Then I looked at the particularly successful results, and at myself, and the to-do lists (aka those budget etc spreadsheets I posted links to a little while ago) and thought ohforpetesake — and took myself to the print shop. I marked everything on those as I measured, and then I plopped all the information onto the drawings on the laptop… ta daa… and now I have it all for reference, I’ll print a copy, and share it, and get on with the other things.

Like cleaning up my sailboat so she can be healthy.

Even measuring my boat parallels what’s happening to the planet.

Or maybe it’s just that there isn’t any aspect of any of our lives not affected physically, psychologically, spiritually, socially, culturally — the whole nine yards… so we’re tripping over parallels like I tripped over the rail behind me measuring the one in front.

A few things need reinventing… Skoro’s stringers, the bilge pump, the way we live… but for now, the measurements are all out of whack and we need to quit playing with paper and lines and numbers and get on with taking care of the boat.

And on that note, here’s the part I meant to post, all nice and tidy and practical by itself… everything you can measure on Skoro (most of it, and the spec sheet is copied from the same source as the drawings, and I did not measure the bins). They’re lovely organized informative diagrams now, with measurements and whatnot fitted in all tidy and colour coded marks and everything!

G26 SPECS (this one isn’t a diagram, but it’s all the measurements so it makes sense here, in case you were wondering about displacement or draft or the width of the foot of the quarterberth or where the fire extinguisher is (possibly not the right place — I need another diagram, of where everything belongs/is!))

…and, because we found a signal flag wall hanging with pockets in the scrapheap by the gutted boat next door the other day (but I forgot to take a photo of it), and because they’re so cool even if you don’t need to learn them — signal flags, and related whatnot!
